Ntcheu district director of agriculture, environment, and natural resources, Edward Katunga, has confirmed an outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in the district.
According to Katunga, the highly infectious disease, which mainly affected cattle, pigs, sheep and goats, has affected Ndembo 2 Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Ganya in Sharpe Valley Extension Planning Area (EPA).
So far, 7 cattle have clinically proven to be affected by the disease.

[Malawi's previous FMD event took place during 2019, when 2 outbreaks, caused by FMDV serotype SAT2 were reported, starting in February and April 2019 in the districts Mzimba and Mchinji, respectively. The event was declared resolved on 15 Sep 2019, summarised as follows in the final report:
Total outbreaks = 2 (Submitted)
Species / Susceptible / Cases / Deaths / Killed and disposed of / Slaughtered
Cattle / 100 000 / 382 / 0 / 0 / 0
Epidemiological comments: Primer and booster vaccination were conducted in Mchinji district with a total of 11 584 and 11 328 cattle out of a 10 000-animal target.
