Among domesticated animal species, cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and water buffalo (_Bubalus bubalis_) are susceptible to FMD. Cattle are usually the main host, although some strains appear to be specifically adapted to domestic pigs. Within the family Artiodactyla, all domestic cloven-hoofed animals of the suborder ruminantia including yaks and of the family suidae are susceptible. Between 1 Jan 2010 and 31 Dec 2019, 109 FMD outbreaks were reported, 28 of which were caused by serotype A and 81 by serotype O. Serotype Asia1 was last recorded in 2009. The spatio-temporal cluster of FMD serotype A outbreaks during the said 10 year period was located in southwest China, while that of FMD serotype O outbreaks was located in central China.
Road density, isothermality, UV-B seasonality and railway density were identified as key factors affecting the occurrence of FMD serotype A. The minimum temperature of the coldest month accounted for most of the FMD serotype O outbreaks, followed by railway density and markets' distribution.
