By the end of 2024, the foot-and-mouth disease attack in Wonogiri Regency had infected 310 cows, 57 of which died. To suppress the spread of the outbreak, Wonogiri Regent [governor] Joko Sutopo led simultaneous spraying in 17 animal markets. In addition, the Wonogiri Regency Government also temporarily closed the livestock market for a week, starting from 3 Jan 2025 to 9 Jan 2025.

Jekek deployed a number of his officers to spray the entire market with tanker trucks filled with disinfectant liquid. Also a number of spray guns were deployed to reach hard-to-reach corners.

"Today, total spraying in 17 livestock markets. Our goal is to kill the virus so that it does not spread and infect more livestock," he said.

Jekek said that his party needed to act quickly, because the spread of the foot-and-mouth disease virus was very fast. According to him, currently the increase in the number of infected livestock is quite significant.

"The number of findings has reached 400 cases; if this is not addressed immediately it could explode and harm farmers. Although there has been no determination of an outbreak, we must act quickly," he said.

As a preventive measure against cases of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in livestock, the Tangerang City Government (Pemkot) through the Food Safety Service (DKP) is vaccinating livestock. On Friday [3 Jan 2025], vaccination was carried out at Gunawan Livestock Group, Karawaci.

Head of Agriculture, Dr. Ibnu Ariefyanto, said that the current status of FMD [locally known as PMK] in Tangerang City is infected. Because, as a market area, especially livestock.

"Today we are vaccinating 14 livestock from the Gunawan livestock group. This vaccination is our preventive measure so that foot-and-mouth disease does not spread further. For Tangerang City, many livestock farmers buy their livestock from other areas. So we also urge that the livestock purchased were already vaccinated," he said.

He added that Tangerang City currently has 1600 doses of vaccine and a target of 1500 livestock for FMD vaccination. Vaccination has also been implemented since 29 Dec 2024 and will last until 7 Jan 2025.

"The situation is still under control, and we are continuing to carry out vaccinations. We have also received 800 doses of vaccine from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia. So we have a total of 1600 doses of vaccine," he said.

Besides vaccinations, farmers also receive disinfectants and vitamins for their livestock.

Farm owner [G] admitted that he was greatly helped by the FMD vaccination carried out by the Tangerang City Government. He hopes that the FMD case in Tangerang City can be resolved soon.

"I am very grateful to the Tangerang City Government for vaccinating my cows. Even though I am a small farmer, I always pay attention to the health of my animals. This really helps," he concluded.

["Wonogiri Regency is a regency in the southeastern part of Central Java [or Jawa Tengah] province in Indonesia. It is bordered to the north by Sukoharjo Regency and Karanganyar Regency, to the east by East Java Province (mainly Pacitan Regency), to the south by the Indian Ocean, and to the west by the Special Region of Yogyakarta" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonogiri_Regency).

"Tangerang is the city with the largest population in the province of Banten, Indonesia. Located on the western border of Jakarta, it is the sixth largest city proper in the nation (excluding Jakarta, which is classed as a province containing 5 administrative cities and one regency)" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tangerang).

Vaccination and movement control are critical preventive measures to minimize FMD infections during the ongoing outbreaks in these areas. Disinfection of slaughterhouses, including wastewater drainage systems, should be implemented to cover the affected areas. The FMD virus in livestock may cause mild zoonotic infections in humans involved in the slaughtering process. - Mod.TTM
